Universities cruise through Asian tour.

The New Zealand Universities five match Asian tour in 2005 took the same shape as in some other years, competitive games in Japan and embarrassingly large wins in other countries.

“New Zealand Universities toured Thailand, Japan and Singapore early in the year. The squad was: Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu, Thomas Gwilliam, Chris Heard, Jamie Helleur, Cam Jowitt, Donny Latu, Peter Leuoso, Andrew van der Heijden (all of Auckland); Adam Roe (Lincoln); Mart Barnes, Nathan Ransfleld, Shaan Stevens,William Tran, Con Williams (Massey); Jason Kawau (capt),
Adam Thomson, Josh Willoughby (Otago); Michael Barnes, Paddy Maguire, James Oliver, Hayden Roche (Victoria); Daniel Alofa, John Elder, Tahi Percy, Alan Syme (Waikato). Original selection Nathan Masters (Victoria) could not tour and was replaced by Thomas.

Coach: Bryce Bevin (Auckland) Assistant coach: Mark Tomsett (Waikato) Manager: Steve Morris (Massey).

Results:

April 20. v Bangkok Selection at Bangkok. Won 48-0. Elder (3),Thomson (2), Percy, Latu, Willoughby tries; Syme 4 conversions.
April 24. v Japan A at Osaka. Won 42-18.Willoughby (2), Kawau, Helleur and Gwilliam tries; Helleur (3), Lam conversions; Helleur (3) penalty goals.

April 27. v Japan B at Tokyo. Won 38-25. Roe (2), Fuimaono-Sapolu, Syme and Leuoso tries; Syme 5 conversions and penalty goal.
May 1.  v Japan Universities at Tokyo. Won 31-29.Van der Heijden, Roche and Syme tries; Syme 2 conversions and 4 penalty goals.

May 3.  v Singapore XV at Singapore. Won 107-0.Thomson (4), Syme (3), Helleur (2), Leuuso, Maguire, Latu, Fuimaono-Sapoiu. Gwilliam, Roche, Oliver and Tran tries. Syme (6), Maguire (3), Latu and Helleur conversions.”
