June 7 1976
Queen’s Birthday Rugby 1976.
For years King’s/Queen’s Birthday Monday had been a significant date on the representative rugby calendar as many unions used the long weekend to turn on something different from club rugby. Some played traditional representative fixtures of long standing on that date and 1976 was no different with eight first class matches involving 16 unions.
Two of those eight fixtures saw the host unions register wins in “Big Brother” v “Little Brother” type encounters, always especially gratifying. Those matches were:
Waikato 13 v Auckland 6 at Hamilton.
Waikato 13. P C Gilbert and R G Myers tries. A W Baker con. B A Stephens pen.
Auckland 6. S L Watt 2 pen.
Referee: Mr E De La Rue (Waikato)
Manawatu 23 v Wellington 13 at Palmerston North.
Manawatu 23. D L Rollerson (2), K W Grainger tries. Rollerson drop goal, con, 2 pens.
Wellington 13. G W Skipper try. B W Cederwall drop goal, C J Currie 2 pen.
Referee: Mr C P Gregan (Waikato).
This was a National First Division fixture, making it an even more satisfying win for Manawatu.
The other matches were:
South Canterbury 7 v Mid Canterbury 4 at Timaru
Hawkes Bay 45 v Wairarapa-Bush 0 at Hastings.
Counties 13 v North Auckland 11 at Whangarei.
Poverty Bay 51 v East Coast 3 at Gisborne.
Nelson Bays 14 v Buller 9 at Westport.
Taranaki 32 v Wanganui 12 at Wanganui.
The Westport and Wanganui matches were both National Second Division fixtures.
