New Zealand U19 win 2002 World Junior Championship.

New Zealand U19 were clear winners of the 2002 Junior World Championship, played in Italy in March 2002. Managed by Kevin Gimblett, coached by Aussie McLean and Leicester Rutledge and captained by Canterbury hooker T T Paulo they were untroubled in their four matches, scoring 275 points whilst conceding just 75. It was New Zealand’s 3rd win in the four years the Championship had been running, and the second in succession. France were the beaten finalist in both 2001 and 2002.

March 24

v Italy: Won 80 – 8. Te Whare (2), Aporo (2), Tuivaiti (2), Williams, Atiga, Waldrom, Ryan, Naoupu, Smith tries. McAlister (9), Aporo con.

March 27

v South Africa (semi-final) Won 41 – 9. McAlister (2), Aporo, Atiga, Ryan, Kaino tries. McAlister 4 con., penalty goal.

March 30

v France (final) Won 71 – 18. Te Whare (2), Aporo (2), Kaino (2), Waldrom, McAlister, Smith, Atiga tries. McAlister 9 con., penalty goal.

Luke McAlister was the leading points scorer with 82, C M T Aporo (5) topped the try scoring.
